What:

The Shell Eco-marathon challenges teams all over the world to build the most fuel efficient vehicle possible. Last years CU Shell Eco team attained 1769 MPG with their prototype vehicle. The goal of this competition is to come up with ideas that can be implemented in todays cars to improve their efficiencies.

Where:

On campus, Durning lab.

When:

Wednesday 12/5/12 at 3 pm in the durning lab

please respond to paul.sweazey@colorado.edu

WWTF Tour!

When:

Friday, 10/19/2012, at 2pm

What:

Gas Turbine with Cogeneration, and Bonus 1MW Solar PV System!

Where:

Boulder Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF)

4049 N. 75th St in Boulder

As you might imagine, treating wastewater produces methane. The WWTF burns this methane in a gas turbine to generate electricity for the plant, and uses the exhaust for heating. The tour will give us a good look at this turbine and cogeneration system. As a bonus, we will also get a look at the plant’s 1MW solar PV system!

RSVP:  Email me (Keith.Yzquierdo@colorado.edu) if you plan to attend or have questions.  I need at least 5 or they won’t do it!

Campus Power Plant

When: Monday, October 29th at 9am (right after class)

We can meet after class and walk over together. The tour is limited to 8 people at a time. Email me (kristen.e.brown@colorado.edu) to sign up. If more people want to take the tour, we can do a second session. In order to enter, you must be wearing long pants and closed toed shoes.

Our campus electricity and heating needs are served by a 33 MW dual fuel cogeneration (CHP) facility and three 13.2 kV branch feeders from Xcel energy.

NREL Solar Radiation Research Lab

When: Oct. 31st 2:00-3:30

Where:   NREL visitors center

The Plant, the Myth, the Legend : Valmont Power Plant Tour

Ever wonder what goes on within the giant 3 smokestacked building on Arapahoe road in East Boulder? Now here's your chance to find out, Xcel energy has graciously granted us a tour of their facility. It's been down for service recently, but Xcel promises that the turbines, generators, condensers, and perhaps even a heat exchanger or two will be running in December!

When: December 4th at 12:00 pm (meeting on Campus).

12:15 if going to the Power Plant directly.

Who: With the added tour, there is plenty of room if you want to go!

Please email daniel.godrick@colorado.edu if you are interested or you need a ride to the Power Plant.

Directions to the Power Plant:

Go East on Arapahoe to 63rd street.

Take a left to go North on 63rd street.

First right after you cross the train tracks.

Park in the lot and meet at the gate!

I still have 3 spots in my car. I am planning to meet at the runner statue on Folsom Field at noon if anyone still needs a ride. For people who are driving right there, the tour starts at 12:15 and we can meet in the parking log.

Boulder Canyon Hydroelectric Plant Modernization Project: 12/6, 11 AM

The historic Boulder Canyon Hydroelectric Project, built in 1910 by the Eastern Colorado Power Company, was scheduled to shut down after a long, prosperous life until the project was reinvigorated with state-of-the art hydroelectric technology in 2012. With a grant from the federal government as part of the Obama Administration-sponsored American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a brand new 5 MW facility was designed using existing infrastructure. What's interesting about this plant is that the two ancient existing 10 MW turbines were replaced by one 5 MW turbine, and the new turbine will actually be able to produce 30% more energy because of its much higher efficiency. I specified the number of people going at between 5-10, so hit me up if you want to check out this both historical and modernized power plant. For more information, see:

New Belgium Tour Saturday, December 8 at 4:30

I've got two words: "Fat Tire". For those who do not know, New Belgium is a brewery located in Fort Collins that produces many amazing beers such as "Fat Tire" and "1554". Because New Belgium makes such great beer, their tours fill up months in advance. I have managed to work out an extra tour slot for up to 10 students. New Belgium is a great example of a responsible and large manufacturer that makes constant efforts to decrease waste and emissions. If you are interested in their environmental performance, they speak openly about current performance and future goals. http://www.newbelgium.com/culture/alternatively_empowered/sustainable-business-story/planet.aspx

They have a great deal of information on their website about their policies towards waste and their effect on the environment. If you want to keep it a surprise and wait for the tour, it's up to you. Let me know soon if you would like to be on the list to come. I only have 10 spots reserved, sorry. It would also be helpful to know who can drive others. I can take two others.
